Phones-as-buzzers trivia is the best format for a mixed-age group: nobody has to pass a controller, shy players don't have to shout, and grandparents can play from the sofa. Here's the whole setup, start to finish.

What you need
- A screen everyone can see — a smart TV with a browser, a laptop or tablet, or a TV you can cast to.
- A phone per player (or per team). Any phone with a browser works; there's nothing to install.
- Wi‑Fi or mobile data. Players don't have to be on the same network — a cousin across the country can join the same room.
- Two to eight players is the sweet spot for a round of QuizKeep. Bigger groups play in teams.
Three ways to get the board on the TV
1. Open it in the TV's own browser (best picture)
Most smart TVs, streaming boxes and game consoles have a web browser. After you create a game, the TV screen link is shown in the lobby: app.quizkeep.com/tv/ followed by your room code. Type it into the TV browser and the board fills the screen in full 16:9 — no mirroring, no black bars, and your phone stays free to be the remote.
2. Laptop + HDMI (most reliable)
Plug a laptop into the TV, open the board in the laptop's browser and press the full-screen button (⛶) in the top corner of the board. Rock solid, and the laptop keyboard is handy for the host.
3. Mirror your phone (fastest)
Hosting from a phone? Use AirPlay (iPhone → Apple TV or an AirPlay‑compatible TV) or screen casting on Android. Turn the phone sideways — the board has a landscape layout designed exactly for this, so the TV shows a proper wide board rather than a tall thin strip.
Step by step
- Open QuizKeep on the screen everyone will watch. On a smart TV, laptop or tablet, open app.quizkeep.com and tap Host a game. Pick a trivia pack and a game mode.
- Put the board on the TV. Either open the board directly in the TV browser at app.quizkeep.com/tv/CODE, plug a laptop into the TV with HDMI, or mirror your phone sideways with AirPlay or Chromecast.
- Everyone joins from their phone. Each player scans the QR code on the TV or goes to app.quizkeep.com/join and types the 5-letter room code. No app download, no account.
- Begin the adventure. The host taps Begin. Questions appear on the TV, answers are tapped on phones, and heroes race across the board as scores update live.
Tips for a great game night
- Mix the modes. Start with a Classic Race, then switch to a co‑op boss fight (everyone versus the monster) so the youngest players get a win with the team.
- Pick the pack for the room. General knowledge for everyone, a kids' pack when the little ones are up, a movies or music pack once they're in bed.
- Use the pause button. Snacks happen. The ⏸ in the corner freezes the timer for everyone.
- Read questions aloud. Tap 🗣️ on the board and it reads each question — great for early readers.
- Keep a campaign going. In the Chronicle, your party's progress carries over from one night to the next, so "one more chapter" becomes a family ritual.
If something goes wrong
- A phone fell asleep and lost the room. Just reopen the join link — the seat is remembered and the player drops straight back in.
- Someone joined the wrong room. The host can remove a player from the lobby (the ✕ next to their name) and they can rejoin with the right code.
- The TV browser is too old to run the board. Use the laptop + HDMI route, or mirror a phone sideways.
- Answers feel late. Everyone should be on decent Wi‑Fi or 4G/5G. If one phone lags, try toggling its Wi‑Fi off and on.
